“GROUND OUT” by IAN WILSON featuring TRÍONA MARSHALL (harp; The Chieftains) & DUŠICA MLADENOVIĆ (violin, from Serbia) – a LAOIS COUNTY COUNCIL COMMISSION
“Ground Out” is a new work by Ian Wilson, one of Ireland’s most acclaimed composers. Written for violin, Irish harp and soundtrack, “Ground Out” is the result of a nine-month project examining the effects of climate change on how we produce and consume our food.
“Ground Out” features music of great lyricism for an unusual combination of instruments, while the work’s soundtrack contains fragments of interviews that Wilson conducted with local experts on the subject. The whole works together to be both a beguiling and absorbing musical entertainment as well as a kind of audio documentary, and builds on the success of Wilson’s 2017 piece “Thresholds” which examined the state of pollinating insects in Laois.
Featuring two wonderful musicians, violinist Dušica Mladenović from Serbia and The Chieftains’ member and Laois’ own Tríona Marshall on Irish harp, the hour-long programme will also include classical and traditional music from Serbia and Ireland. “Ground Out” is funded by an Arts Grant award from the Arts Council of Ireland and is presented in collaboration with Laois County Council.
